An experience not to be missed. Hike along the rugged terrain of the Samaria Gorge cutting through a limestone plateau and at a length of 18 kilometers it is Europe’s longest gorge. You will visit and will surely be enchanted by the beautiful landscapes of Crete. At one point in the gorge, the walls are only 3 meters apart from each other. Are also known as the ’iron curtains’ with sides rising sheer up to 100 feet.

The hike is followed by a short cruise around the southern coastline to the pretty coastal village of Chora Sfakion, where you will have the opportunity for a lunch break in one of the local traditional Tavernas.

What to take with you to Samaria Gorge: Proper walking shoes, photo camera, a bottle of water, fruits or sweets during the walk, swimming gear, bathing suit.

This excursion in Crete is weather dependent. In winter, the canyon is closed, because it is very difficult to get through. It opens around May and ends at the end of October. For trekking in the Samaria Gorge, we must be dressed in light light-colored clothes, hard boots and have with you light snack for an energy boost.

More about the Samaria Gorge

Samaria Gorge is located in the prefecture of Chania in the White Mountains mountain range. In 1962 it was designated the National Forest of Greece and is the place where many endemic birds and various animal species live. The most famous of the animals that find shelter in the Samaria Gorge is the Cretan herring (kri-kri).

Experience Cretan wildlife as there also grow rare herbs and plants, such as wild dice and wildflowers. The gorge took its name from the village of Samaria, which owes its name to the Byzantine church of Osia Maria. The village was forced to abandon the few inhabitants when the gorge was designated, National Park. The abandoned houses of this village lie just before the middle of the gorge and are now being used by the guardians of the park. This village has its source and places to sit, so it is ideal for a stop, water and maybe a snack for those who visit the gorge.
